Oxidation equilibrium: The oxidation equilibrium is by far the most important reaction during remelting, since it not only controls the extent of desulphurization and cleanliness of the refined metal, but also has a decisive influence on the loss of oxidisable elements. In more detail, since the solubility of iron oxide in CaF2-based ESR slags is very low, this leads to very high oxygen activity in the slag, even at low oxide concentrations [11].
