To select my ﬁeldwork sites, I asked those with years of professional experience in the ﬁeld of eating disorders their opinions of various international services. I searched through journals such as the International Journal of Eating Disorders for program descriptions and sent many introductory letters and e-mails. After much negotiation and information seeking (and several refusals), I distilled my choices to two overseas centers, one in Vancouver and the other in Edinburgh. Both were internationally renowned for their innovative programs, with a range of services from day programs, community-based residential programs, and outpatient consultancies.
In hospital ward rounds I found it easy to write lengthy notes, as writing case notes and constructing people into patients and was taken for granted in these settings (see also Barrett ). The main players came from medicine and feminism, articulating their own causes, explanations, and methods of treatment and prevention. These differing conceptualizations circulated in all the sites I encountered, to varying degrees, and provided me with shifting lenses through which to view anorexia.
