The father, Patrick Brontë (originally Brunty), was born and reared in Ireland by a poor and probably illiterate peasant family. His mother, a Catholic by birth, had become a Protestant upon marriage to his father. Young Patrick was clever enough to be a schoolteacher at age sixteen and thereafter admitted to Cambridge to study for the ministry—a most unusual accomplishment for an impecunious Irish youth.
